URGENT: Contact members of the House Committe on Education regarding HB539

*** Sorry for the error in the previous message. The proper number is HB539***

Please contact the members of the House Committee on Education and ask them to support HB 539 by Rep. Beryl Amedee (former CHEF of LA Legislative Liaison), which is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, April 19.

Current Louisiana law requires 11-year-old students in approved home study programs to provide evidence of current immunization against meningococcal disease to the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). And it requires the state Department of Education to notify the parents or legal guardians of such students of this requirement.

The proposed law by Rep. Amedee removes this reporting requirement, but does not change the recommended immunization schedule. The reporting requirement will be removed from the approved home-study form if this bill passes.

The Education Committee members contact information is found here (click the 'Contact Members' tab). With no time to waste, please contact them today and make the voice of homeschooling heard!  Thank you!

Homeschool Legislative Day

    April 26 - Baton Rouge

This event, which is organized by CHEF of Lafayette, is for all Homeschool Families across Louisiana. This is a way for students and parents to make our presence known to the state legislators, to meet legislators and others who impact the political process in Louisiana, and to even participate in the legislative process by having the opportunity to testify regarding proposed bills. Speakers for the event will include various legislators, Gene Mills of the Louisiana Family Forum, and other leaders.

Registration includes both breakfast and lunch, and is only $12 per person, $10 for those from 6-12 years of age, and free for those 5 and under. All participants must register, regardless of whether meals are needed. There is a separate tour designed especially for younger children (info here).
